Poker And Its Variance

Written on December 24th, 2009 by My playerno shouts

Due to the dominance of skill on the outcome of most hands. Played at many different sites online, it is a somewhat unique online casino game in that it is played against other players rather than against the casino.

Poker comes in a variety of forms and has been climbing up steadily in popularity for many years now. There are many kinds of poker games being played around the world, from the really serious gambling ones, to the ones that are being played just simply for fun.

Texas Hold’em

Texas Hold’em is by far the most renowned form of poker, both online and at land-based poker rooms. Because players share the board cards, as many as 10 can play. Each player is dealt 2 hole cards, then a round of betting ensues. 3 more cards are dealt face-up, known as the flop, the beginning of the community cards. Another round of betting, and then a single card is dealt up, known as the turn. Another betting round, and the final card, known as the river, is dealt. After a round of betting for the showdown, the player remaining with the best 5-card hand wins.

Limit Texas Hold’em – Betting amounts are pre-determined and limited to a fixed sum.

No Limit Texas Hold’em – Made famous by the poker legend Doyle Brunson and Amarillo Slim Preston with no maximum bet restriction.

OMAHA

Omaha is a slightly more complicated version of Hold’em. The difference is that players are dealt with 4 hole cards, instead of 2. When composing an Omaha hand, players must use 2 of their hole cards to combine with 3 of the the board cards for best hand. The betting rounds remain the same as in Hold’em.

Omaha also has its own variation, known as Omaha High-Low. This gives players the chance to make the lowest hand, under the same conditions, as well as the highest hand.

Omaha Hi – Only the high hand wins the pot.

Omaha 8 / Omaha Hi-Lo – The pot is split between the best high hand and the best qualified low hand which are 5 cards under 8 with no pair. If there is no qualified low, the high hand wins the pot.

SEVEN CARD STUD

Seven-Card Stud is played between 2 and 8 players. It consists of an initial ante, followed by 5 betting rounds. Each player in a game of stud gets 3 cards face down, and 4 cards that must be exposed for all players to see. The goal of Seven-Card Stud is to make the best 5-card poker hand with the given seven cards.

Seven Card Stud Hi – The most straight-forward stud variation, as the straight-up high hand wins the whole pot.

Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo – The pot is split between the best high hand and the best qualified low hand with 5 cards under 8 with no pair. If there is no qualified low, the high hand wins the whole pot.

Razz – It is the Seven Card Stud in reverse. The only difference is that you’re trying to get the lowest possible hand. Straights and flushed usually don’t count against you. The lowest possible poker hand is A-2-3-4-5. Ace counts as a low card in Razz and is usually played with fixed betting limits.

CARIBBEAN STUD POKER

Caribbean Stud is different. In this game, everyone plays against the casino or house, which acts as a dealer. The house pays out all winning bets. To win a round of Caribbean Stud, a player must beat only the dealer’s hand and the players in the game do not contend between each other.

H. O. R. S. E

HORSE is the combination of Texas Holdem, Omaha, Razz and Stud. Play alternates between the 4 different types of online poker games and it’s thought to be the test of a truly good poker player to be able to play all 4 card games.

FIVE CARD DRAW

Five Card Draw can be played with between two and five players. Each player in a game of Draw receives 5 cards face down, and may discard or draw up to 5 cards after the first betting round. The player with the highest five-card poker hand at showdown wins the pot.

Poker is perhaps the most recognized card game around. Its popularity cuts across cultures and national borders and it is played by millions of people around the world.

Showing A Cool Poker Face

Written on December 19th, 2009 by My playerno shouts

Keeping a poker face is the most important aspect to playing poker. Not only must you inhibit in giving anything away to your opponents, but a good poker player is also a skilled bluffer, and able to mislead opponents into making false assumptions.

Poker faces are also necessary to bluffing as well, its like you’re acting like a robot or else he won’t fall for the bait, or he will call to your bet and have a full house when you have 2 pair.

As a new online poker player attempt to apply what they have learned in a live ring game, they come to the drastic realization that what you say or don’t say, and how your movements or lack of movement gives other players information that they can and will use against you.

When you are playing poker at online casino, one of the most important things you’ll need is your poker face. You can do without a great many things, but without your poker face on, you will find that other players are constantly taking advantage of you.

Here are some tips to keep a poker face:

The “Yes” And The “Yeah”

Remember, never ever say “yes!” or “yeah”, even whispering isn’t good. Why? Because your opponent will think that you are holding a good hand. It is natural for anyone to put the flags out unless you have experience with poker faces.

Your Ideal Poker Face

Try to stand in front of a mirror and think about different things, and watch how your face reacts. Then think the same thoughts, but try to show less.

If you have a hard time observing your face and simultaneously sprinkling up these emotions, use a digital camera or make a short video while you’re practicing. Learn your facial expressions so you can learn how to maintain a poker face.

Killer Eyes

As a poker player, your eyes can be a deadly giveaway if you have a particularly good or a particularly bad hand. If you do make eye contact, don’t hold it unnaturally long; a stare is just as much of a giveaway as not looking at all.

Try to be aware of how often you blink. When you’re under stress, the blink rate usually climbs significantly. Be aware of your blinking, and force yourself to pause if you find yourself blinking more than normal.

The Speaks

You should be clued-up on of what they say and how they say it. Make sure that your not too chatty or too quiet when you have a good hand. Keep your level of conversation and tone of voice at a consistent level throughout the game. You will often find yourself playing against an opponent who keeps a constant mockery going to force a reaction and get a read on your hand.

Once you have mastered the poker face, you can bluff your way through a hand or lure your opponent into making a larger bet.

Bad Beat Poker – It Happens

Written on December 2nd, 2009 by My playerno shouts

If you ever see an angry poker player carrying on and throwing a fit about a hand, you can generally assume this player has taken a bad beat.   “Bad beat” is a poker term referring to having a strong dominating hand lose to a much weaker hand held by another player.    If you’ve read my previous uplifting article about bad beat jackpots, you might be excited about the possibility of experiencing a large bad beat in a brick-and-mortar casino, but most players hope they can defy the laws of the universe and never have to experience bad beat poker. It doesn’t matter whether you’re playing online poker or brick-and-mortar poker, players are constantly getting frustrated and complaining about bad beats.   If I had a dollar for every bad beat story I’ve heard in my life, I wouldn’t be sitting here playing a $20 online multi-table tournament; I’d be vacationing at the beach. Generally it’s the better and more experienced players who are amazed at losing to large underdog hands.   Newer players often don’t realize the odds of a bad beat poker hand like pushing all in with AdJc and miraculously beating AsKs by spiking a Jack on the river. Experienced and educated poker players need to take a step back and realize that bad beats will always happen when playing poker.   Most decent poker players always talk about how amazed they are when they experience a bad beat, and they try to claim that it always happens to them.   One thing that experienced players don’t realize is that if they are constantly playing with weaker opponents and experiencing bad beats, it’s because they always have the dominating hand. You hardly ever see an advanced poker player lay down a bad beat on a much weaker player, especially in a no-limit game.   The reasoning behind this is because as the better player, he generally has the better hand going into an all-in situation, so it seems like weaker players never experience bad beats.   Players have to learn to take pride in generally making the correct play with the better hand and simply brush it off when they finally experience a horrifying bad beat. Another common topic arises when talking about bad beats: how bad beats seem to happen far more often while playing online poker than when playing in a casino.   For years players have spread myths and rumors that online poker is rigged.   These players accuse the online card rooms of creating large action hands for the players involved in a game to drive up the size of the pot, which spikes up the casino rake.   These myths and rumors are exactly that: all fake.   All online poker rooms experience rigorous pattern testing and verification to provide completely random hands for all games at all times. The truth of the matter is, when playing online poker, you see far more hands than when you are playing in an actual casino.   Playing brick-and-mortar poker, you might be dealt around 30 hands an hour, depending on the game, the dealer, and the other players at the table. However, while playing online poker, you are probably seeing 50+ hands an hour.   You might be experiencing double the number of hands as compared to casino poker, which might make it seem like bad beats are dealt more often, when actually their occurrence is generally about the same.   If you are playing two tables at once in an online poker room, you are easily seeing 40-50 more hands per hour than if you were playing one table in a brick-and-mortar casino. One last fact about online poker and bad beats is that the majority of players are more hesitant about calling large all-in situations when playing in actual casinos with actual money chips in front of them.   Often online players, especially newer players, don’t have a problem pressing the “Call” button on their monitor, even in situations where they shouldn’t be calling.   After all, it only takes one click of a mouse.   If the same player were forced to push out $85 in chips in a $1/$2 brick-and-mortar casino no-limit game, he might think twice about his hand strength before throwing his money away. So, all in all, no player can truly avoid receiving or giving bad beats in poker.   Taking a hard bad beat sticks out in your head much longer than laying a bad beat down on another player.   To keep your game sharp, you must learn to simply blow off bad beats, remain focused, don’t get frustrated, and understand that other players making bad calls is exactly what you really want.   These are the players who keep you in the money and make you a winning poker player. As I finish this article, I am dropped from my multi-table tournament, 6 spots before the money, when my pre-flop all-in with AK gets called by KQ, and my opponent turns a Queen.   It happens, that’s poker, next tournament please.
